What to Wear to HBCU Homecoming: The Style Guide by School
Howard, AUC, NC A&T, Hampton, FAMU, TSU. Each homecoming has its own dress code. Here is the by-school playbook — day, night, and everything in between.
Every HBCU homecoming has its own aesthetic. Show up to Howard dressed for GHOE and you'll look confused. Show up to GHOE dressed for Hampton and you'll look like you're auditioning for a magazine. The dress code isn't in the invite — it's in the culture.
Here's the by-school playbook. Day, night, and the transition in between.
The four things that never change
Every homecoming, every school:
- The parade is a full outfit. Even if you're just watching from the sidewalk.
- Football is dressier than pro football. Jerseys are welcome, but jerseys with intention.
- The evening reads dressy. Alumni events, party circuits, and Greek galas run through the small hours in most cities.
- Sunday is styled soft. Brunches, gospel programming, travel-home outfits.
Howard University — professional-polished
DC energy. Howard is the city, the corridor, the industry-adjacent crowd. Homecoming here reads closer to CBC Weekend than to a college football game.
The Yardfest look (day):
- Women: high-waisted jean and a tucked-in silk or knit top, ankle boot or block heel, structured blazer or leather jacket over the shoulder. A crossbody, not a tote.
- Men: wide-leg trouser, layered knit polo under a corduroy or wool overshirt, Chelsea boot or clean sneaker. Sunglasses that matter.
The evening look:
- Women: a leather midi or a wool sheath, boots or a mule, a statement coat. Real jewelry. Fewer prints, more structure.
- Men: wool trouser, roll-neck under a blazer, a monk strap or a boot. Fall palette — camel, oxblood, cognac, cream.
Colors: neutrals do the work. Camel, cream, navy, chocolate, oxblood. Pattern is the accent, not the anchor.
Brand picks: Aliétte, Sergio Hudson, LaQuan Smith, Wales Bonner, Waraire Boswell, Undra Celeste, Fear of God.

AUC (Morehouse / Spelman / Clark Atlanta / Morris Brown) — dressed up, matched, ready for the photo
Atlanta homecoming energy. Dressed for the photo, dressed for the tailgate, dressed for the after-party without changing. This is the fashion-forward end of the circuit.
The tailgate look (day):
- Women: a body-conscious knit set or a linen suiting piece over a bodysuit, block heel or a dressed sneaker, a cross-body, big earrings, hair done.
- Men: a matching set (linen or knit), gold hardware, a loafer or a sneaker (only the good ones), sunglasses that photograph.
The Homecoming Ball / step show look (evening):
- Women: the dress that gets asked about. Body-con, cutout, or column with a slit. Real heels. Hair still done. The step show doubles as a fashion show.
- Men: suit, no shirt-and-tie ceremony — a knit polo or a silk shirt under the jacket, no socks with the loafer, no watch that whispers.
Colors: the boldest palette on the circuit. Prints, saturation, metallics. Not shy.
Brand picks: Christopher John Rogers, Sergio Hudson, LaQuan Smith, Undra Celeste, Aliétte, Tia Adeola, Fe Noel, and the Atlanta boutique circuit (Grail, Rich Girl Athletics, ANNAKIKI).

NC A&T (GHOE) — casual-cool, layered, effortless
Greensboro homecoming energy. GHOE is the most cousins-and-classmates of the circuit — the outfit reads belonging, not photographing. Aggie navy and gold everywhere.
The tailgate look (day):
- Women: jeans that fit, an Aggie tee tied at the waist over a bodysuit, a chunky belt, a boot or a chunky sneaker, a canvas or leather tote.
- Men: jeans or wide-leg cotton pant, an Aggie sweatshirt or a vintage HBCU tee, a work boot or a running shoe, a fitted cap.
The evening look:
- Women: cropped leather pant or a slip skirt, a knit or a body-conscious top, boots, a small bag. Less "photograph" than the AUC, more "hang."
- Men: dark jeans, a wool overshirt, a boot. GHOE evening reads dressed-down-but-styled.
Colors: navy and gold everywhere (the Aggie palette), then cream, cognac, wine, denim.
Brand picls: vintage HBCU merch (worth the eBay hunt), NC A&T bookstore essentials, Aime Leon Dore, Kith, Wales Bonner (for the older heads), Rowing Blazers when they do the HBCU capsule.

FAMU — color, print, the "yeah I'm here" energy
Tallahassee homecoming energy. FAMU orange and green, but the crowd reads maximalist across the board. This is the most colorful homecoming on the circuit.
The tailgate look (day):
- Women: an orange or emerald set, prints, gold jewelry, a straw hat if the weather calls for it (Florida sun in October is real).
- Men: a color polo (not white), a bright short, a loafer or a slide, a chain.
The Ball / evening look:
- Women: column dress in a jewel tone, statement heel, hair up (Tallahassee humidity is still a factor into October).
- Men: suit in a fall color (rust, forest, oxblood), open-collar shirt, a good loafer.
Colors: orange and green (the FAMU palette), plus jewel tones — emerald, sapphire, ruby, gold.
Brand picks: Autumn Adeigbo (the prints), Hanifa, Andrea Iyamah, Fe Noel, House of Aama for the men's evening pieces.

Hampton University — the most-styled of them all
Hampton takes fashion seriously. The alumni base includes some of the most well-dressed rooms in Black America, and Homecoming Week in Hampton is where they show up.
The tailgate look (day):
- Women: a silk-blend blouse tucked into wool-blend wide-leg trousers, a heeled loafer, a structured bag, a wool coat over the shoulders.
- Men: wool trouser, a knit polo under a well-cut blazer, no watch, real shoes.
The evening look:
- Women: a floor-length gown in a fall color, real jewelry, real heels. Hampton's Ball is dressier than most weddings.
- Men: a proper suit, dressed to the nines. Some heads bring a second suit for Saturday night.
Colors: all fall — camel, oxblood, forest, cream, navy, chocolate. Prints are rare.
Brand picks: Sergio Hudson, LaQuan Smith, Aliétte, Christopher John Rogers, Wales Bonner, Waraire Boswell, Kimeze Eyewear.
Tennessee State (TSU) — Music City meets Aggie precision
Nashville homecoming — a city where the country-and-Black-professional layers overlap. The Aristocrat of Bands' precision energy carries into how alumni dress.
Day: cowboy boots are earned, not costume. If you own the good ones, wear them. Dark denim, a leather jacket, a fitted turtleneck.
Evening: Music City brings a country-and-southern-luxe energy into the mix — leather, suede, fringe done right, and the boot as evening shoe.
Colors: dark blues, cognac, oxblood, cream, chocolate.
Prairie View / Texas Southern — Texas energy
Big-D energy on a Prairie View scale. Suiting, hats (real ones), boots (real ones), high-glam without irony.
Day: the wide-brim hat is a legitimate day accessory. Suiting separates in fall colors. Boot or loafer. Gold hardware.
Evening: a full suit. A silk gown. Texas doesn't do casual in the evening at homecoming.
Colors: all fall + jewel tone metallics.
Universal footwear truths
- Sneakers only in white or cream, only clean, only day. Never in an evening room.
- Block heels beat stilettos for tailgates on grass and cobblestone (which is every school).
- Chelsea boots are the workhorse across all homecomings for both men and women.
- Loafers (penny, bit, or horsebit) are the workhorse for men. Own two pairs.
- Cowboy boots legit only at TSU / Prairie View / Southern-adjacent programs. Don't force it at Howard.
What NEVER works
- Costume-y homecoming attire. A costume tee, a wig, a face-painted "school spirit" fit — reads as tourism.
- Anything wrinkled. Even at GHOE. The bar is casual, not sloppy.
- PWI merchandise. Even accidentally. Especially if it's your own alma mater — save it for another weekend.
- Bathing suits under cover-ups. Not this weekend, not this weather.
