Richmond wears its history on its sleeve. Jackson Ward earned the name "Black Wall Street of the South," and that legacy still sets the table today — from soul food kitchens along 1st Street to seafood spots across the river in Manchester. Add in day parties on Broad and downtown plazas, and Sunday has plenty of directions to go. Here are 10 to know.
Mama J's Kitchen — Jackson Ward
An iconic Jackson Ward soul food brunch and a cultural anchor of the historic Black "Wall Street of the South." Find it at 415 N 1st St, right in the heart of the neighborhood. If you only make one stop, make it this one.
The Speakeasy Grill — Jackson Ward
Black-owned brunch in historic Jackson Ward. The menu leans into the good stuff — an Eastern Shore Crab Omelet and a Yardbird & Waffle among them. Neighborhood roots, real plates.
The Hive Bar & Grill — Jackson Ward
A Jackson Ward Black-owned bar and grill serving weekend brunch at 23 W Marshall St. Expect Peruvian chicken and comfort fare in an easy bar-and-grill setting. A solid weekend anchor in the Ward.
Croaker's Spot — Manchester
A legacy Black-owned seafood brunch across the river at 1020 Hull St in Manchester. Founded in 2001, it's been doing this a long time. Come for the seafood, stay for the history.
Lillie Pearl — Brook Road
Black-owned modern Southern cooking at 305 Brook Rd. The kitchen turns out peach cobbler French toast and cheddar biscuits — Southern flavors with a fresh point of view. Worth a seat.
Harry's at Hofheimer — West Broad
Home of the "Sing Along Brunch Club," a throwback brunch built on 2000s R&B and hip-hop you'll be singing along to. Find it at 2818 W Broad St. Brunch with a soundtrack.
Brunch on the Plaza — Downtown
UnlockingRVA's monthly Black community brunch and day party at Kanawha Plaza downtown. Live DJ, Black-owned food trucks, and a 3–9pm window to settle in. A gathering as much as a meal.
Brunch on Broad — West Broad
A Black creatives' brunch day party set in the Historic Hofheimer Building at 2818 W Broad St. Come for the food, stay for the crowd. A day party built around community.
