Detroit brunch runs the whole map. Chicken and waffles on the Avenue of Fashion. Southern plates and Afro-Caribbean spice up Woodward through New Center and the North End. Upscale sit-downs Downtown, mimosa memberships in Eastern Market, and day parties that turn Sunday into an event. Here are 10 Black-owned spots and recurring series to know.
Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles — Avenue of Fashion
Black-owned by former NFL player Ron Bartell, at 19345 Livernois Ave. Sunday brunch runs 10am to 6pm. It's part of the Avenue of Fashion revival, and the name says the play: chicken and waffles.
Joe Louis Southern Kitchen — New Center
Black-owned Southern brunch at 6549 Woodward Ave. The menu leans into comfort — think Cinnamon Roll Flapjacks and Southern Cobbler French Toast. A New Center stop with the plates to match.
Yum Village — North End
Chef Godwin Ihentuge's Black-owned Afro-Caribbean spot at 6500 Woodward Ave in the North End. Jerk chicken, jollof rice, suya, maafe. Spice and comfort in one.
Savannah Blue — Downtown
Black-owned and upscale, at 1431 Times Square Downtown. The style is Southern-meets-Detroit, and it's popular with Detroit's Black professionals. A sit-down when you want the nicer version of brunch.
Motor City Mimosa — Eastern Market
Black-women-owned by TeQuion Brookins and Nina Love, in Eastern Market. There's a bottomless mimosa membership and live music. Brunch built to linger.
Miss Eva's — Grand River
An intimate Black-owned speakeasy at 19566 W Grand River Ave, home to the "R&B Brunch Experience by Curt Got Crabs." Ribeye, salmon, and a live DJ. Brunch with a soundtrack.
Restaurant at One Mike — Downtown
Made-to-order R&B brunch at 1331 Broadway St Downtown, with DJ Eli on the tables. Bottomless mimosas, bellinis, and bloody marys, served 11am to 3pm.
The Annex — Downtown
Detroit's #1 Sunday brunch day party at 24 W Adams St. Expect R&B, hip-hop, and themed Sundays. Free with RSVP till 5pm.
Detroit Shipping Company — Midtown
"Afrobeats Fridays" inside the Midtown food hall at 474 Peterboro St. DJs Woleworld and Keeb run the sound. A food-hall setting with the party built in.
Spot Lite Detroit — East Side
A day-party series at 2905 Beaufait St on the East Side, featuring Black Detroit house and techno DJs — the foundational Black electronic music this city gave the world.
